The George Washington Hotel perfectly blends historic character and modern comfort. The hotel was designed for luxury and relaxation from the very beginning. Celebrities of all types have stayed through the years. The Grand Ballroom has served as the venue for hundreds of magnificent weddings and events. The owner works every day to make sure the hotel stays as incredible as the day it opened. The staff’s mission is to offer a taste of that classic luxury that is so hard to find.
The George Washington’s story begins with the hotel’s architect, William Lee Stoddart. He designed the hotel in the early 1920s. This was not the only hotel he designed. Stoddart devoted his life to designing urban luxury hotels. The style of his work reflects the fashion in art at that time.
Scientific management had become extremely popular. The idea behind scientific management was to streamline workflow and eliminate waste in the workplace. Stoddart was passionate about incorporating these ideas into his designs. Everything in the hotel is essential and serves a purpose. While other architects focused on general appearance, Stoddart believed function came first. He devoted his life to designing magnificent hotels while refusing to compromise the integrity of his work. This is where the natural and true beauty of the hotel finds its roots.
The hotel was finally opened for business in 1923. It quickly gained a reputation as the epitome of leisure in Washington Pennsylvania. The hotel enjoyed visits from countless celebrities. A few of the more notable were Al Capone, Henry Ford, Bob Hope, and even The Beatles! It was the place to be. Spending a night at the George Washington was a pleasure only the most privileged could enjoy. JFK and Marilyn Monroe also spent nights in the hotel. Since then, the suites they stayed in have been named and decorated in their honor.
During the last 20 years of the 20th century, the hotel’s previous owner began to neglect the building. Repairs were needed, but no one was stepping up. Business had dropped significantly. It seemed like the end of the hotel. How had this happened? How had one of the hottest places in all of Western Pennsylvania been reduced to barely scraping by? Kyrk Pyros asked himself this same question.
Kyrk Pyros, the current owner, first discovered the hotel in 2002. He was told about its incredible history and the stories behind it. He knew with the proper funding and the right management, the hotel could be restored to the masterpiece it used to be.
For the last 14 years, Kyrk has worked tirelessly towards that end. The hotel is once again a gateway into the lost world of classic luxury. Our guests enjoy top level peace and comfort when they book a room with us. Our events are exhilarating. The staff works restlessly to make sure your stay or event are fine-tuned and perfect for you. It’s always a pleasure to experience both the history and character that makes it so spectacular. Treat yourself to a night in the George Washington Hotel!
